~ Bogs after Andy refuses his "friendship" in the showers. |
Bogs Diamond is a major antagonist in the 1994 film adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption. Despite departing from the story early on unlike the main antagonist and the two main protagonists regretting their past, Bogs stands out as one of the most vile characters of the film due to his crimes and predatory nature, essentially serving as a realistic example of real life prison rapists.
He was portrayed by Mark Rolston, who also played Captain Del Rio in Halo 4.
History[]
Bogs is an inmate at Shawshank State Prison. It is unknown exactly what he is in prison for, but given his behavior, it can be assumed that he was convicted either for rape or another kind of assault, and that he was guilty of whatever crime(s) he committed.
Whilst serving time in prison, Bogs decides to have fun at Shawshank by tormenting other inmates, and gathers together a gang called the "Sisters" for this purpose.
When Andy Dufresne arrives at Shawshank, Bogs and his gang instantly take a "liking" to him, due to his willingness to fight back. Red tries to warn Andy to avoid Bogs and the Sisters for his own safety, but the gang manage to corner Andy in a warehouse anyway, and they brutally beat him before gang-raping him. Afterwards, they spend the next few years making advances on Andy. Sometimes he is able to fight them off, but other times, he is not so lucky.
One day, Bogs and the Sisters corner Andy in a projection booth. Andy tries to fight back, but Bogs and his friends overpower him, and Bogs proceeds to threaten to shiv Andy in the head if he doesn't give him and his friend Rooster oral sex. Andy plays on his ignorance by claiming that shoving a knife through a person's skull will cause the victim to bite down. He proceeds to call Bogs an "ignorant f-ck", angering Bogs and causing him to beat Andy within an inch of his life. Andy ends up in the infirmary for a month, and Bogs spends a week in solitary confinement. After being released from solitary, Bogs is confronted in his cell by Byron Hadley, who beats him to the point where he is crippled for life and according to Red has to spend the rest of his days drinking his food from a straw. Bogs is transferred to a minimal security prison, and the rest of the Sisters finally put an end to their habit of raping inmates, or at least Andy.
What Makes Him Pathetic?[]
- He leads the Sisters, a gang of prison rapists who attack Andy during his first two years at Shawshank.
- It is likely he and The Sisters have done the same thing to other inmates in the past before targeting Andy.
- He is a coward, as he only targets Andy with his gang to back him up.
- He puts Andy in the infirmary for a month by beating him up after he refuses to give him and his friend BJs.
- He cowardly screams for help as Hadley and another guard start beating him in his cell.
What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]
- According to Red, Bogs was sometimes unable to overpower Andy even with his gang backing him up.
- He's easily talked out of mouth-raping Andy by hearing that sudden brain trauma affects the victim's jaws.
- He doesn’t consider the consequences of beating Andy up, as it not only ended with Bogs having to spend a week in solitary confinement, he, of course, received a beating at the hands of Hadley who Andy has helped with money problems.
