Look, Derek...I never hurt you! You could have said no.
~ Carl justifying his crimes to Derek Morgan and attempting to guilt-trip him.

Carl Buford is a major antagonist in Criminal Minds. He is the owner of the Upward Youth Center who molested all the young boys under his care, with one of them being main character Derek Morgan, making him the latter's archenemy and evil counterpart.

He was portrayed by Julius Tennon.

What Makes Him Pathetic?[]

  • He is a pedophile who raped 55 boys by posing as a benevolent youth center owner while telling them to "man up and look at the sky" as he gleefully put them through long periods of sexual abuse that left them traumatized for life.
  • His crimes have onscreen impacts such as Keron Bendor being addicted to drugs, Rodney Harris becoming a serial killer targeting dozens of false pedophiles and Derek Morgan admittedly becoming who he is thanks to his personal relationship with Buford in his childhood.
  • He killed three of his own victims by strangling them to death so he could frame Derek for the murders and intended to withhold Rodney's identity from the FBI to make sure his killing spree continues, which put many lives at risk.
  • When Derek confronts him, he tries to gaslight him into believing he just had a bad dream while being raped and instead of admitting to his mistake, he simply manipulates Derek into being at fault by telling him that he could have said no.
  • When the police arrest him for his crimes, he still has the sheer audacity to desperately beg Derek to save him, but to no avail.
  • When he is sent to prison, he converts to Islam so that his gang wouldn't kill him in prison, but this fails as they learn of his actions, gang up on him and ambush him, causing the perverted serial killer's well-earned death.

What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]

  • He is extremely delusional, frequently telling himself that he's helping the kids he raped and he displays an inability to see that his actions are illegal. In fact, all his "help" does is ruin the lives of people who come into contact with him and cause them a great deal of trauma.
  • He abuses his position of power as he's meant to take proper care of the boys at his youth center rather than raping them, putting him in severe danger of being sacked and arrested.
  • While he was molesting Derek, he didn't bother to think about the long-term effects of his actions as all that happened was Derek willingly approaching the FBI to become an agent to take down criminals, with Carl obviously being one of them, showing that he essentially set himself up for failure.
  • Him framing Derek for killing 3 boys was a stupid move on his part as it only further cemented the agent's plan to expose him for the monster he truly is.
  • He caused his own downfall, as when Derek confronted him, he literally blames him for his trauma by telling his victim that he could have refused the first time he was being sexually assaulted when two FBI agents (who are Derek's friends) were in the same place, giving them an easy chance to arrest him.
  • When he was caught by the police, he foolishly pleaded Derek to make the officers leave him alone despite being highly aware that he raped him as a child, meaning Derek wouldn't even dare convince his allies to spare him.
  • Even in prison, his stupidity worsens as he converted to Islam to avoid getting attacked by the other prisoners, although it's implied that they already knew of his crimes and planned to kill him when they get a realistic opportunity to.
  • In the end, his lack of common sense leads to him screwing himself over, being forced to serve a life sentence in prison and eventually getting killed. If he had just done his job properly, he wouldn't have been taken down. Any charisma he may have is ultimately overshadowed by his stupidity.

Trivia[]

  • He is so far the only PP to come from Criminal Minds.
