Durand is the secondary antagonist of the French animated series The Long Long Holiday. He is a smug, rude Frenchman and a collaborator with the Nazis, trying to get disloyal French folk in trouble with the Nazis.
In the French version, he is voiced by Antoine Lelandais. In the English version, he is voiced by Keith Faulkner.
What Makes Him Pathetic?[]
- He collaborates with the Nazis. While he claims this is just to maintain order over Grangeville, his dialogue implies it’s because he hates Jews, and probably children as well.
- He is a rude and smug man who has little to no respect for others.
- He is responsible for Fernand's arrest, being the one who turned him in for not wearing a yellow badge, which would later lead to his death in the Auschwitz concentration camp.
- He told the Nazis about the Robinson’s hideout, eager to have the Robinson’s killed, ultimately leading to a raid and the death of Mr. Herpin, the teacher and secretly the leader of resistance Sparrowhawk.
- Although his death could be seen as sympathetic due to him sobbing pathetically and denying his guilt while the children watch, he deserved it for his actions, and it more shows how brutal war can be.
- He did help two Nazi soldiers by fixing their car, but this is more of him sucking up to the Nazis rather than being polite.
- Pretty much everyone in town hates him, even the Nazis barely tolerate him.
- He seemingly doesn’t have a job and spends all day drinking and smoking at the bar.
- Even though the Robinsons were somewhat sympathetic to his death, this does not make himself sympathetic as he deserved it for his actions.
What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]
- He never bothered to hide that he's a Nazi sympathizer or argue against anyone who accuse him being one.
- He is a terrible fighter, as Grandpa Lou, an elderly man, beat him up to the point he was crying. While Lou is a farmer and WW1 vet who’s only in his 50’s, he doesn’t appear to be hurt at all once he’s finishing, Implying Durand didn’t even try to fight back.
- He gets Krieger involved for trivial things, such as accusing Gaston for singing "We'll meet again", which was a rather popular song at the time. Since he spends all his time at the bar that has a radio, he should at least heard it once.
- He, instead of focusing on taking down the resistance, spends all his time trying to get the Robinsons in trouble, who are children that serve as simple spies for the rebels. If Durand actually succeeded in getting them killed, it would only strengthen the resolve of the resistance.
- When he briefly becomes the mailman, he asks the kids to tell him if they see anything suspicious, despite the fact they don’t like him and would never help him willingly.
