~ Tyrion calling Janos for his lack of honor |
Lord Janos Slynt is a supporting antagonist in the A Song of Ice and Fire novels and its televesion adaptation Game of Thrones. During his introdutcion, he is the commander of the City Watch of King's Landing, before also becoming a noble, the Lord of Harrenhal and the head of House Slynt, until he is stripped from his titles and sent to the Night's Watch.
He was portrayed by Dominic Carter in the show.
What Makes Him Pathetic?[]
Both Versions[]
- He betrayed Ned Stark when the latter was confronting Cersei and Joffrey in the throne room by turning his own men against Ned's after being promised a lordship, organnizing a slaughter of the entierety of Ned's household present in the Red Keep.
- He also organized the massacre of Robert Baratheon's bastards, whom most were barely children. He also kills the baby Barra by himself in the TV show, while in the books he has his right-hand Allar Deem do it for him.
- Hypocritically states to Tyrion that Ned was a traitor and was trying to corrupt him. He also almost attacks Tyrion for being insulted only to be seized and sent to the Night's Watch.
- Calls out Jon for sleeping with the Wildlings when the latter returns in Castle Black, and also wants him executed for treason.
- Insults Jon after the latter assigned him to command Greyguard, telling him to "stick his order up his bastard arse", causing his own well-deserved demise.
Exclusive to the Novels[]
- He tries to ingratiate himself with Stannis Baratheon, behaving like a lickspittle and praising him for his achievements despite the fact the latter was aware of his corruption, his involvement with Joffrey's ascension to the throne, and the fact that he used to call Stannis a traitor. It only resulted with Stannis humiliating him by exposing some of his corrupt activities to the Night's Watch.
Exclusive to the TV Series[]
- He suggests to Alliser Thorne to have Jon sent to Craster's Keep to that he can die to the mutineers.
- He calls Gilly a "whore" in front of his friend Sam and when she objects, he claims he will offer her a coin to check it.
- He doesn't do anything useful during the Battle for the Wall, and even cowardly hides in Castle Black's kitchen with Gilly.
What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]
Both versions[]
- He is terrible at his job as Commander of the City Watch, constantly accepting bribes and corruptions and failing to keep the streets of King's Landing safe.
- While he succeeded at his goals for a while by becoming Lord of Harrenhal, it was done through dishonorable acts by betraying Ned Stark and massacring Robert's bastards, both of which weren't even his own idea, which does not make him smart.
- He made a very foolish and fatal decision by disobeying Jon when the latter became the new Lord Commander of the Night's Watch and even insulting him, resulting in his own execution. All this in spite of the fact that he was named a garrison commander in charge of his own castle and men, just because said castle, Greyguard, required hard work to be rebuilt and made fit for habitation.
- In the novels, he was also given a whole day to think it over and change his mind, before Janos refused again.
- Cowardly pleaded for mercy when Jon was about to behead him.
Exclusive to the Novels[]
- He helped Joffrey and Ser Ilyn Payne to carry out a hasty and unwise execution of Ned Stark, while ignoring the objections of Cersei and the rest the small council, when he should've consulted them, especially Cersei, who was the Regent of the realm (with authority above that of the king until he comes of age).
- Afterward, he happily lifted Ned's severed head for display.
Exclusive to the TV Series[]
- He's shown to be a massive wimp, cowardly hiding in the kitchen along with Gilly during the Battle for the Wall and not doing anything useful at all.
- He also got humiliated for it, when he could've ensured the silence of those who knew about his cowardice by becoming nice to them. Instead he stupidly decided to antagonize Samwell Tarly after the latter was the only black brother who knew his embarassing secret (along with Gilly), resulting in Sam exposing him, showing how foolish and arrogant Janos is.
- While trying to bond with Ser Alliser wasn't dumb, it failed since Alliser didn't care when Janos was executed. Also his idea of sending Jon to Craster's Keep failed too since Jon came back and even victorious, convincing even more people to trust him. He also claims to have "poweful friends" in King's Landing, which is probably a lie since no one missed Janos after he left.
