~ Kent Mansley cowardly abandoning his comrades at Rockwell to save himself. |
Kent James Mansley is the main antagonist of the 1999 animated film The Iron Giant. He is a corrupt government agent who seeks to destroy the Iron Giant to further his career.
He was voiced by Christopher McDonald.
What Makes Him Pathetic?[]
- Despite his claims of protecting America by destroying the Giant, he never truly cares about his country and only about his ego.
- His whole reason for hunting the Giant down is utterly petty, because his car got ate by it. Even after the Giant proves himself a force of good, he still can't get over his paranoia and continues to wanna kill the giant, even lying to ensure the army keeps firing at the Giant, dooming the entire city as a result.
- His prejudice agains the Giant is not only because it's from outer space, but also because it's not American-made. This shows how much of a racist he truly is.
- He lied to General Rogard that Iron Giant killed Hogarth out of his paranoid belief that the Giant is a threat, in order to convince them they need to kill him no matter what. Not only did Mansley seek to take credit from killing the Giant and to be hailed as a hero, but he is willing to murder a child just to advance his career.
- Upon seeing Rockwell is doomed because of his incompetence and he along with all the soldiers were going to die by the missile he has fired at the Giant, Mansley cowardly ditches them all to save himself, even going as far to say screw his country, proving all of his patriotism are fake. Luckily, the Giant and Rogard intervene him from leaving while having him arrested for treason.
- While he has some comedic moments, he is taken more seriously and subverted all of the comedy when he drugged Hogarth and tried to separate him from his mother. Not only that, those moments came from his own expense and were played for karma.
What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]
- He initially brushes the Giant off as something big in Rockwell, until his car got eaten by it.
- He is easily outsmarted by Hogarth, who is a kid, in multiple instances.
- In perhaps his most infamous attempt to kill the Giant, he steals General Rogard's radio to command the missile launch. Not only he is not authorized to use nuclear weaponry without permission, but due to the missile being locked on to where the Giant is, which is in the middle of the city, he practically doomed the entirety of Rockwell, including himself. He then has the audacity to say that everyone can "duck and cover" to survive the missile.
