Lord Balthazar, also simply known as Balthazar, is the overarching antagonist of the 1981 Smurfs cartoon. He is Gargamel's cruel godfather.
He was voiced by the late Keene Curtis.
What Makes Him Pathetic?[]
- He is a very cruel godfather to Gargamel, and almost always, when he meets him, humiliates him, and sometimes hurts him.
- He is a very power-hungry man who is ready to do anything to become stronger, even sacrifice many lives, and even enjoys it.
- Throughout the animated series, he tried to kill a lot of Smurfs. And his ways of ending them are much more violent and destructive than Gargamel's, which even the latter is terrified of.
- He killed a Ducky chicken just to upset Smurfette.
- He was cowardly running away from a pack of animals that chased him after killing Ducky. Then he somehow trapped them all in cages and began to starve them.
- He was going to conduct cruel and painful experiments on Baby Smurf, thereby condemning him to a fate worse than death.
- He threatened the Smurfs with killing Papa Smurf if they didn't sacrifice their lives for his gold.
- In one episode, his niece comes to him, and throughout the episode constantly annoys him with her antics, but simply sending her to Gargamel.
- In one episode, he starts arguing with one guy, childishly insulting him with "hotheaded hazbin".
- Once he watched an elephant perform, and he was constantly humiliated by throwing balls at him, pouring water on him, and when he threatened the elephant, he simply ridiculed him.
- He grabbed Father Time and forced him to show him how to see the future, threatening to "turn back time" if he refused, which would lead to the deaths of billions of people.
- In his last appearance, he becomes so cowardly and incompetent that his are easily persuaded with just one word not to pick up an axe, after which he pretends to smile.
- Although he has many comedic moments, they only emphasize his pathetic and incompetence, and do not make him attractive at all.
What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]
- Although he considers himself the "greatest wizard", he actually knows little (if at all) about magic. He even rejects his own books about magic, considering it nonsense. He also did not know about the existence of the Smurfs and Father Time, and until recently denied their existence until he personally encountered them.
- Unlike Gargamel, whose plans, although they always failed, at least he thought them through to the end, Balthazar almost never does this, and always thinks only about achieving a minute-by-minute goal, not thinking about steps ahead. Also, unlike Gargamel, he does not learn from his mistakes, and often repeats them several times.
- Catching Father Time and picking up his magic scythe, he clumsily accidentally summoned a small dinosaur, which later bit him on butt, after which he himself ended up tied up on a chair.
- When he saw the prediction in the magic amulet that his own dragon would eat him, he did not even try to prevent it, but still stood at the window that is located above his dragon, so even when the amulet fell, Balthazar jumped after him, as a result falling right into the mouth of his dragon (he himself saw this dragon below and the fact that the amulet was falling right into his mouth, but he jumped after it anyway, which was very stupid).
- He didn't even notice the Baby Smurf, which flew literally in front of his nose (even his pet raven noticed him), and when he accidentally saw him in his room, he reacted violently to it.
- He tried to remove the magic locket from the Puppy first with his hands, and then with ordinary scissors, although it was magical and struck with lightning when touching it.
- He was going to shoot one cat, but a smurf fell on his musket, and pointed it directly at Balthazar's foot, but the latter pulled the trigger anyway, as a result of which he shot himself in the foot (this did not happen quickly, so do not think that he pressed before the musket was pointed at his foot).
- He invented a giant wooden robot to attack the kingdom, but was unable to properly protect the control cabin, which caused a lot of arrows from the guards to fly into it, which almost hit Gargamel.
- While cooking a certain mixture, he refused to heed Gargamel's warning when he tried to warn him of an error, after which the mixture explodes. However, Balthazar does it again, even when Gargamel warns him again and the mixture explodes again. After many unsuccessful attempts, the mixture they have prepared pours out and they both start bouncing in pain.
