Lieutenant Colonel Jack Sullivan is a major antagonist in Season 4 of Stranger Things. He is a delusional colonel who deems Eleven is a threat to the country and must be neutralized, but in the process, harms people through his rash, sloppy and undisciplined actions, willing to endanger and torture good citizens of his own country, or members of his own government, to find Eleven.
He is portrayed by Sherman Augustus.
What Makes Him Pathetic?[]
- Despite being a well-intentioned extremist, Sullivan is a downright unsympathetic one through his immensely hypocritical actions, who despite his genuine desire to protect the country, is willing to achieve dangerous ways and harm innocents the same way. Dr. Martin Brenner of all people, a ruthless human experimenter of adults and children alike, comes across as more sympathetic just in comparison, and all this is due to how dead set wrong he is about Eleven but is so arrogant in his belief he will do anything to prove he is right.
- Despite expressing disgust at Brenner's actions, he too is a massive hypocrite who will cross the same lines he does, be it to torture and/or kill innocent Americans, even children.
- To showcase how immensely ruthless and corrupt Sullivan is, he would place a member of his own government, Agent Wallace to brutal torture for results, and shoot up suburban neighborhoods.
What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]
- His entire reasoning for believing Eleven is the traitor is laughably stupid that makes no sense, but is so arrogant that he actually believes he is right, that Dr. Sam Owens has Eleven, who he knows is in Lenora, California, to kill random teens in Hawkins, Indiana, halfway across the country, despite his position as the guy who covers up Brenner's experiments knows he hasn't come close to achieve long-range assassinations, and random teens are made targets so Owens could sell her to the Russians. The theories are ridiculous in multiple angles (such as why would Owens order Eleven to just target and kill random teens and how would she be able to possibly kill them when stuck halfway across the country), especially when he actually considers the more sensible possibility that all the Hawkins murders are actually a result of the Upside Down activity, but believes his theories make more sense.
- Believing the Byers have knowledge of Eleven's whereabouts or are hiding her, instead of a covert operation like any competent military leader will do, he straight up endangers the lives of the very people he needed to interrogate by shooting up the Byer's house, in which this blunder lead to the deaths of many of his own men and most of the agents present and his leads escaping, with only one agent alive still in the house.
- He has Agent Wallace tortured to give away Eleven's location but this was a very ineffective that backfired against him horribly as instead of revealing, he clammed up due to the trauma, unable to answer basic questions, much less complex ones like "where is Eleven?". He doesn't have the patience to wait to make him be able to actually settle down and have the presence of mind to ask and then immediately sends him to be tortured again for days on end, with the same results. This is probably the highlight of Sullivan's massive incompetence.
- Overall, every action the Colonel takes is thoroughly undisciplined, rash and sloppy that will backfire against him horribly that it wouldn't be surprising he achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel due to bribes.
Trivia[]
- He, Troy Walsh and Two are the only villains in Stranger Things to count as Pathetic Pinheads.
