What wife would do the things I've done for you? What wife would trust you the way I trusted you? When you gave me those drops and told me to pour them into Jon's wine. My husband's wine. And you told me to write a letter to Cat telling her it was the Lannisters...
~ Lysa talking about her plan with Petyr

Lady Lysa Arryn, née Tully, is a supporting antagonist in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and its HBO adaptation Game of Thrones. She is the youngest daughter of Lord Hoster Tully and Lady Minisa Whent. She is the younger sister of Catelyn and the older sister of Edmure. She was married to Lord Jon Arryn during Robert's Rebellion. After her husband's death she was the Lady Regent of the Vale of Arryn, ruling on behalf of her young son, Robert Arryn (named Robin in the TV series). She pursued a policy of isolationism since the death of her husband.

She was portrayed by Kate Dickie in the show.

What Makes Her Pathetic?[]

  • In the books, she raped an unconcious Littlefinger in his sleep after he was grievely wounded with his duel against Brandon Stark. While he enjoyed it too it was because he mistook her for Catelyn.
  • She poisoned her husband Jon Arryn under Littlefinger's orders, run away from King's Landing with her household, and then sent a letter to her sister to frame the Lannisters for it, thus unnecessarily starting a chain of unfortunate events that would lead to the War of the Five Kings, as she created an enmity between the houses Stark/Tully and the Lannisters that never needed to exist in the first place, also weakening House Baratheon's position of authority over the realm.
  • She constantly breast-feeds her 7/8 (novels) or 10 (TV series) years old son Robin and spoils him, turning him into a petulant whiny brat who enjoys throwing people through the moon door. It's implied Lysa would obey his whims and execute condemned people whenever he demanded it, which might've resulted in petty criminals or even innocent prisoners being killed.
  • When Catelyn brings her Tyrion, she tries to have him executed despite the fact it would inevitably start a war against the Lannisters and cause thousands of deaths (although the war started anyway, thanks to her sister Catelyn abducting Tyrion in public).
  • She attempted to force Ser Vardis Egen volunteer to fight for her by slaughtering the inexperienced dwarf Tyrion, not bothering her at all that this was such an unfair and dishonarable move, which is why Vardis objected and asked for a champion who could match him in battle.
    • During the trial's duel, she clearly shows that she doesn't care about Ser Vardis, but only that he managed to kill Bronn, which he fails due to the disadvantages of using an unfamiliar type of weapon and being slowed and made tired by Bronn, who was only wearing mail, while Vardis wore heavy plate armor. Yet despite seeing such disadvantages, Lysa didn't even consider calling for a break and speak to Vardis about the unfair trial by battle.
  • She refuses to give any sort of aid to her own family, House Tully, or her relatives, the Starks, to fight the Lannisters when the war is declared, claiming they would all lose despite the Vale's powerful army, leaving her brother Edmure alone to lead and fight to defend the Riverlands, while only Robb's forces came to the Tullys' aid.
  • Throughout the entire war, she repeatedly ignored all the pleas of her nephew Robb, her brother Edmure, and Lord Yohn Royce to send an army of the Vale to join the Starks' cause, which angered the Royces and led to Lord Royce to nearly plot a rebellion, which didn't happen due to the Red Wedding happening.
    • Although she was afraid to be involved in a rebellion against the Iron Throne, she could've let Lord Royce lead the Vale forces, while pretending to be neutral, as she could've stayed in the safety of the impregnable Eyrie, while her lords and their armies would've aided her family in the war for her.
  • In the TV series, she torments Sansa when she arrives at the Eyrie with Littlefinger, asking her uncomfortable questions like if she has feelings for Petyr and also hurting her hands, showing her obsessive and perverse nature.
  • When she sees Petyr kissing Sansa, she lashes out on her and threatens her to throw her through the Moon Door by pulling her by the hair and forcing her to look down into the threshold before being stopped by Petyr.

What Makes Her a Pinhead?[]

  • She gets completely fooled by Littlefinger, believing he is in love with her despite clearly only loving Catelyn. He then uses her like a puppet to start destabilizing the realm by poisoning Jon, which eventually leads to the War of the Five Kings.
    • In the books, Petyr easily convinces Lysa to poison Jon by using the fact that Jon was planning to send her son Robert to be fostered to Dragonstone as a ward of Lord Stannis.
  • She is a terrible mother, breast-feeding her son despite him being too old for it and constantly spoiling him. This turns him into a spoiled and petty little brat who constantly wants to watch people "fly" through the moon door.
    • She also tends to get blinded by her love for Petyr, for instance when Sansa apologizes for breaking Robert's toy/slapping Robin, Lysa completely ignores it and instead focuses on her kissing Littlefinger.
  • Tries to have Tyrion executed despite the fact this would obviously start a war with the Lannisters and cause thousands of deaths.
    • As Lysa at this point didn't know the war was already starting anyway, regardless of her actions, she should've simply sent Tyrion back to King Robert, as such serious case was the Crown's business, in an attempt to do the smarter and wiser thing.
    • Not only that, she also tried to do it without a trial and when Tyrion proposed his brother for his champion, she forced him to appoint a representative that day.
  • She idiotically made her captain of the guard, Ser Vardis Egen, fight Bronn with Jon Arryn's huge silver falcon sword, which wasn't a type of weapon Ser Vardis was an expert with. In the book, Catelyn noted how uncomfortable Vardis was with the unfamiliar sword, thinking how the knight clearly would prefer to fight with his own sword, and was surprised by her sister's stupidity.
  • In the TV series, there's an awkward moment where she moans loudly while having sex with Petyr, not suppressing her orgasms and preventing Sansa from sleeping.
  • In the TV series, she unneccessarily torments Sansa by asking her uncomfortable questions about whether she has feelings for Petyr and hurting her hands, causing her to break down crying.
  • In the novels, she drunkenly makes the idiotic mistake of confessing her crimes to Sansa, while threatening her, all in front of a witness (Marillion) which is one of the main reasons her husband Petyr decided it's best to kill her, and frame Marillion for it.
  • Threatens to kill Sansa when she finds out she kissed Petyr, leading him to being forced to kill Lysa instead since she was no longer useful to him.
  • Even after her plan to kill Sansa fails, she is left standing precariously at the moon door, where not only Peter but Sansa could kill her, if the latter was cruel enough to do it. She also thought Petyr would love her as a result of his statement, only to for Petyr to push her down in surprise.
