Marcus Cole is a major antagonist of the Netflix original series 13 Reasons Why adapted from the Novel of the same name. He is the school president of Liberty High who mainly only cares about his reputation and is a member of the Baker's Dozen.
What Makes Him Pathetic?[]
- Unlike most characters, he has absolutely no sympathetic qualities, that even fellow Pathetic Pinhead Monty has (albeit they fell heavily flat).
- Despite his father wanting him to be a great African American leader, he does many shameful things with his position, taking abuse of his power.
- He is a cowardly loser who abandons any morals he has to protect his reputation and hangs out with Bryce Walker and his jock friends, despite knowing what bad company they are. All of his friendships are completely proven to be pragmatic rather than genuine.
- He thinks of Hannah as a slut and purposefully show up an hour late to his date with her, bringing his friends with him in plain sight (not even bothering to ask them to enter at a different time), so he can try to impress Hannah by forcefully grabbing her thigh and attempting to have sex with her in a public restaurant. This leads to her loudly screaming at him to get off and then he remorselessly justifies that he thought she was easy. Even worse, Marcus is creepily calm when he nearly molests Hannah in front of his friends (including Zach who had to stay at the restaurant to comfort Hannah).
- He is partly to blame for Hannah's suicide and unlike most other tape subjects, he feels absolutely zero remorse for it, only wanting to make sure he isn't exposed. He even blames Hannah's suicide as blaming herself and being a drama seeking whore.
- He makes out with a girl on-tape with Bryce and the others, then when this gets leaked, he gets blackmailed and cowardly begs Bryce to help him stop it, thinking he owes him a favor.
- He lies in court that he was wrongfully rejected by Hannah who was sexually attracted to Bryce (her rapist)?when this is not true.
- He becomes a butt monkey after being blackmailed by Tyler and Cyrus, getting subjected to multiple humiliating pranks like paint exploding in his face or having to confess Bryce Walker is a rapist.
What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]
- Although he is the school president, he is rarely shown to have any feats of intelligence, with the narrative focusing more on his stupid actions. Even if he was shown to be charismatic and manipulative in his introduction, this falls apart when his true colors are revealed.
- He wore a light-up sombrero at night to prepare for Halloween while trespassing Tyler Down's house to talk to Clay, somehow not getting caught.
- He shows up late to his date with Hannah where he just wants to show off to his friends that he can seduce her. He doesn't even try to have his friends enter the restaurant at a different time, then gives them a suggestive wink when he sexually assaults Hannah, making his intentions obvious. This ends up screwing him over as by trying to coerce Hannah she screams at him to get off him in the public restaurant and he rebukes by screaming he thought she was easy.
- By soliciting a girl on camera, he completely screws himself over and allow Tyler and Cyrus to use the tapes to blackmail him and turn him into a butt monkey subjected to humiliating pranks such as exploding paint on his face.
- Eventually, all of his stupid actions get him suspended from school, with nothing indicating he ever recovered from it.
Trivia[]
- Only the Netflix version of Marcus counts as his Pinhead moments in Season 2 do not exist in the novel.
