“ | Clearly your dad didn't beat you hard enough 'cause you're still a fucking idiot. | „ |
~ Bryce calling Monty out on his stupidity when he suggests beating Tyler, despite that it would trace back to Bryce who is already on parole. |
“ | Do you know what I got Alex? I got my friends, I got the team. I don't get to be all "boo-hoo I'm sad my friend died", I'm gonna put a bullet in my head so the whole world feels sorry for me. Jesus, you wave that gun around like I give a shit. I don't, man. If I sell out Bryce or lie either way my life falls apart. I got no one else on my side. I can't run home, that team's my home. Going to playoffs, winning state, being an athlete? That's not about fun, for me it's about survival. It's all I got. It's everything. | „ |
~ Monty to Alex on the motivation for his crimes. |
Montgomery "Monty" de la Cruz is the secondary antagonist of the Netflix original TV series 13 Reasons Why adapted from the Jay Asher novel of the same name. Starting off as an insensitive and easily-annoyed bully at Liberty High School, his sociopathic nature becomes apparent by the second season, where his crimes become more abhorrent and even deadly.
He was portrayed by Timothy Granaderos.
What Makes Him Pathetic?[]
- He uses his father's abuse towards him as an excuse for his sadistic personality and to torment whoever he wants. He even admits to Jessica that is the reason why he acts the way he does.
- He is a stereotypical jerk jock who uses the friendship of other jocks for his own benefit as told by his Survival Speech in Season 2. He tosses any morals aside and uses them to escape his abusive home life. Even then, he frequently acts like a blatant jerk to them such as making fun of Justin for having a druggie mother.
- He takes every chance he can to horribly bully weaker students every chance he gets, especially Tyler Down whom he even consistently attacks, reaching the point where even Bryce of all people (even before his heel-face turn) would stop him. He also bullies Tony Padilla for being gay, calling him the f-slur.
- He frequently makes childish insults that make him look stupid and annoying to both the narrative and people in universe. Examples include mooning Tyler when his nude photos leak, pretending his shirt is a bra to insult Hannah in the movie theater, calling Jessica a bitch during assembly, asking Alex if him and Tyler are fucking or joking about Clay's name as shit.
- He molested Courtney Crimson at the school dance and interrogated her about the photo of her and Hannah kissing, threatening to spread it to everyone just to be a jerk. When she lied that it was Hannah and another girl, he instead spread that rumor which would cause others to believe she is a psycho lesbian and would later contribute to her suicide.
- He constantly defends Bryce Walker, knowing him to be a serial rapist. He allowed her to rape Hannah Baker which would later lead to her suicide. Later, in season 2, he spends his time committing crimes to silence any witness about the rape over Hannah which include trying to run over Clay, trying to have Alex commit suicide, taunting Jessica with a sex doll (knowing she is a rape victim), taunting the Baker family about their dead daughter for absolutely no reason and many more.
- He beats down Tyler in the buttocks and rapes him with a broomstick over getting baseball season cancelled (which he was sorry for) and threatens to do it again later, while also mocking him about and laughing at him during an assembly. He also justifies this as something that has happened to every other guy to Tyler or tells Bryce it was like hazing. He never shows any remorse for this whatsoever.
- He proves himself to be a massive coward under his tough front. When he gets back from suspension, he is afraid to fight Alex again. When he is surrounded by Clay and his group about the Polaroids, he cowardly lies about where they are to get away. When Tyler confronts him about raping him, he cowardly sells out Bryce by saying he ordered him to do it to avoid getting in trouble.
- He gets upset when he is not chosen for team captain of the Football team, feeling he rightfully deserved the title.
- He repeatedly shows himself to be a misogynist who openly calls Hannah a whore (at one point even took off his shirt and asked Hannah about her panties to taunt her while she was doing her job), screams "bitch!" while Jessica gives her feminism/president speech to try to be funny and makes fun of Jessica's protest, calling them all horny lesbos.
- After hooking up with Winston Williams at a party, he beats him up just for talking to him out of fear other people will find out he had a sexual encounter with him.
- When he is getting arrested for raping Tyler, he refuses to show any remorse for and just asks why his dad isn't getting arrested instead of him. When his dad asks why he did that to Tyler, he refuses to give any justification and insists he was just messing with him.
What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]
- Unlike Bryce, he has absolutely no self-restraint and acts like a constant jackass in public which frequently destroys his reputation and credibility.
- He gets bad grades in school to the point of failing, which he never bothers to make up.
- As shown by the papers for tests in his bag, it is well suggested he only got good marks because he copied off other students. It is also implied he was dumb enough to copy down even the name (in pen).
- He speeds in the school parking lot and almost runs over Alex and a few other students, only stopping at the last second. When Alex is understandably angered by this, Monty makes barely any attempt to diffuse the situation and fights him in front of the entire school. This draws attention to himself and leads to Mr. Porter catching him beating Alex when he is already down. This unsurprisingly gets him suspended for 3 days since he instigated the fight.
- He publicly molests Courtney at the school dance to get information out of her, which she is able to use against him in court (though it doesn't work).
- He mistakes Clay's name for Corey during the school dance.
- For no reason other than to be rude, he leans his face in to taunt Tony by calling him a homophobic slur, which gives Tony (a skilled boxer) a clear chance to punch him right in the face and knock him out.
- He commits incredibly stupid crimes to cover up Bryce's rapes that only result in Bryce getting in more trouble rather than diverting attention since they were obviously connected to him. He barely even made any attempt to disguise these crimes, such as using Bryce's Range Rover to try to run over Clay, which would likely have made Bryce get arrested for murder. The only reason Monty or Bryce did not get in trouble is thanks to Bryce's lawyers, which Monty was likely unaware of. This would even lead to Bryce turning against him in the long run.
- He gave Alex a gun and told him to shoot himself. Not only did this trigger nightmares and cause him to remember that Monty was complicit in letting Bryce r*pe Hannah (with Alex being amnesiac beforehand), but this would stupidly work against him as Alex could later use the gun to threaten Monty.
- He thinks it is a good idea to beat up Tyler when he gets back to school for ruining baseball and while Bryce is on probation. Even Bryce is aware of how stupid this is, due to the fact it would be obvious it was linked to him (like the former crimes Monty committed) and Monty already almost f*cked up his plea deal, then says his dad clearly didn't hit him hard enough because he is still an idiot.
- He personally rapes Tyler in the school's public bathroom out of a fit of rage with two other guys later leading to his imprisonment since he did nothing to stop Tyler from telling other people than threatening him. He does not think about the long term consequences of this action and the possibility people would find out at any point in the story, with his reason for doing so (i.e. he was angry Tyler had caused his baseball season to get canceled) being absolutely petty.
- He is too arrogant or stupid to see that his supposed best friend Charlie St. George doesn't actually like him and feeds him information about his crimes multiple times, even though it becomes clear later Charlie doesn't actually like him.
- He doesn't think to have Charlie leave the room when Bryce confronts him about Tyler's rape, which later leads to Charlie helping Tyler expose Monty.
- He tells a stupid lie that he was drinking booze at Charlie's house on the night of Bryce's murder, which Charlie later proves isn't true.
- He beats up Winston Williams in a public party just for talking to him after they had sex due to fear of his homosexuality being found out, instead of keeping it obscure. Had it not been for Bryce bribing Winston, he most certainly would have gotten in trouble for this.
- He makes a stupid insult on Clay's name sounding like shit, leading to Justin calling him out for how stupid he is.
Trivia[]
- He is an interesting case of being a Pathetic Pinhead as while he can not count as a Hate Sink due to the writers attempted to make him remembered as a three-dimensional, sympathetic, honorable and redeemed jerk with a heart of gold after his death in Season 4, this completely failed as Monty was consistently shown to be the opposite of this when he was alive.
