~ Rin, screaming at her daughter while violently beating her |
Rin Takahashi, usually known as simply Rin or Mom, is the primary antagonist of the OMORI fanfiction Time to Disinfect on AO3. She's the mother of Mari and Sunny who went unnamed in the original game. In this continuity, her daughter Mari was diagnosed with autism at a young age, leading to Rin, who looks down on autistic people for not being "normal", abusing and manipulating Mari throughout her life.
What Makes Her Pathetic?[]
- She emotionally abused Mari for years before the start of the story because Mari wasn't "normal", raising her to believe that autistic people are unlovable and the people around her will hate and abandon her for showing autistic behaviors, leading to Mari internalizing severe self-loathing and ableist beliefs.
- She constantly berates Mari for not being perfect, nitpicking every mistake Mari makes and blaming her any time things go wrong regardless of whether it's her fault or not.
- She manipulates Mari into thinking that she loves her, and all her mistreatment is justified, when she's actually just a bigoted ableist who hates her daughter.
- When Mari broke her knee in an accident while playing softball, Rin ignored a doctor's recommendation that Mari go through physical therapy to recover from the injury and immediately had Mari checked out from the hospital instead, resulting in her knee not healing properly and causing her chronic pain for the rest of her life.
- During the story, she gets so frustrated that she starts physically abusing Mari, slapping her hard enough to leave a large bruise across her face, which Rin then refuses to take responsibility for, lying to her husband that Mari tripped and hit her face on the banister of the stairs instead.
- In another later argument, she grabs Mari by the arm hard enough to dig her sharpened fingernails into Mari's skin, and ignores Mari pleading for her to let go. When Mari fights back by headbutting her, Rin flies into a violent rage revealing her hatred of Mari for being an "autistic freak" while repeatedly beating Mari across the head until Mari flees from their house.
- When Mari accidentally injures herself while running away and their neighbor Elena Rodriguez has to call an ambulance for her, Rin shows up at the hospital and still refuses to take any responsibility, trying to cover up her abuse by lying to Elena and attempting to manipulate her into thinking everything was Mari's fault.
What Makes Her a Pinhead?[]
- She's a bigoted, ignorant ableist who believes all kinds of nasty stereotypes about autistic people and tries to teach Mari to believe them as well.
- She tries to present herself as a reasonable and respectable parent, but she's awful at actually acting like it, coming off as condescending at best.
- Her selfishness and egotism mean she has an awful temper, making her very impulsive and quick to snap and lash out whenever things don't go her way.
- She tries to make Mari appear as "normal" so that she can uphold a reputation as a respectable family to their neighbors, but her terrible parenting leaves Mari anxious and stressed, causing her to have meltdowns in public, leading to rumors about Mari being autistic spreading around Faraway Town, the exact opposite of what Rin wanted.
- Her lies and manipulation aren't clever or well-thought-out, and she's shown contradicting herself several times. Her tricks only work on Mari because Mari is a minor and Rin is Mari's mother, so she could raise her to not know any better. When she tries to manipulate Elena, a fellow adult, she completely fails and Elena doesn't believe it for a moment, calling Rin out on her obvious lies and nonsensical arguments.
- She only got away with her abuse as long as she did because Mari believed it was normal and didn't report her. When Mari is injured and has to go to the hospital, the evidence of abuse is so blatant that her doctor immediately recognizes it and calls Child Protective Services.
