You are no fucking good for anybody, you hear me? You act like you're above it all, but it seems like you're in deeper than anybody. You're no good for your mother, that girl of yours, not anybody. So take your shit... and go live with that rich buddy of yours.
~ Seth berating Justin to break him.
You can live in a fancy house, but you're still a fucking junkie just like your whore mama.
~ Seth provoking Justin into attacking him when Clay Jensen and Ani Achola enter his den.

Seth Massey is a supporting antagonist in the 2017 Netflix teen drama 13 Reasons Why. He is the boyfriend of Amber Foley and the abusive stepfather of Justin Foley as well as his archenemy who frequently abuses and tries to disown him.

He was portrayed by Matthew Alan.

What Makes Him Pathetic?[]

  • While he lacks the rapes committed by Bryce and Monty and doesn't attempt to shoot up Liberty High like Tyler, he makes up for it by being a horrible domestic abuser who constantly strangles Justin and attempts to break his will by telling him he is a worthless piece of trash who doesn't matter, which only worsens the poor boy's trauma in the process.
  • He has been dealing drugs in his town for a couple years, earning thousands of dollars and a reputation as he is feared by everyone around him.
  • It's implied that his abuse extends to Amber, not just Justin, given he frequently screams at her, supplies her with numerous drugs and forces her into being loyal and obedient to him against her will, showing that even Amber is intimidated by the man.
  • He beats up Mr. Porter.
  • He creepily stalks Justin to get his stolen money back.
  • He mocks Bryce Walker's death by referring to him as a "dead kid", although he arguably deserved it for being a serial rapist.
  • Out of spite, he pulls out his gun and tries to kill Justin, Clay and Ani when they break into his den.
  • Even Clay Jensen, who is known for being very empathetic and brave, is terrified of Seth, further proving how evil the latter is.

What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]

  • He frequently insults and chokes Justin while pinning him to the wall, even though it's very easy for the next door neighbours to hear all the yelling and call the police on him for child abuse.
    • The fact that this would lead to Seth being arrested isn't even mere speculation either, as Amber has to stop him from physically and verbally abusing her son or else the woman who lives in the house next to theirs will get him in trouble with the cops.
  • He once told Justin to move into his own house, although he knows that the boy is only 17 years old and not only has a lack of survival skills, but doesn't even know how to pay rent.
  • While he might seem successful in his abuse, it ultimately has hilariously bad effects on Justin as the latter had to run away from home and sleep at Bryce's house as a means of escapism, only for Justin to eventually turn against Bryce like the rest of his buddies. This leads to Seth getting his own money stolen by Justin, who desperately needed to survive but ended up becoming homeless and forced into prostitution.
  • He repeatedly violated his parole from prison, which would only extend his time in jail rather than letting him be bailed out early.
  • When Justin tries to attack him in his den, he pulls his gun on the boy, knowing that Clay and Ani were there and had a realistically easy chance to call the police on him for threatening to kill someone with a weapon that he illegally possessed.
