Shou: We are the same! We're the same! You're just like me!

Ed: We're not!
Shou: Oh, but yes we are! The opportunity was right in front of us and we took it! We had to even though we knew it was against the rules!

~ Tucker's villainous breakdown, comparing himself to Edward Elric.
Damn brat, figuring it out so quickly.
~ Tucker's reaction when Ed finds out what he did to his family.

Shou Tucker (ショウ・タッカー Shō Takkā) is a minor antagonist in the Fullmetal Alchemist manga and 2009 anime series. He is a State Alchemist known for creating talking chimeras and is visited by the heroes Edward and Alphonse Elric. During the brothers' visit in his estate, they uncover the horrifying truth behind his work.

He was voiced by Makoto Nagai in Japanese, and by Chuck Huber in the English dub.

What Makes Him Pathetic?[]

  • He turned his own wife and 4-year-old daughter Nina into talking chimeras by merging them with dogs both in the name of science and to prevent losing his job, for which Ed would've beat him to death if it wasn't for Al. His wife starved herself to death just to end the pain, while Nina was mercy killed by Scar.
  • He shows zero remorse for his actions nor does he take any responsibility for them, calling human transmutation "a necessary step" while also complaining that nobody understands him since he and Ed both did the same thing.
  • His argument saying that he and Ed are no different falls flat for three main reasons:
    1. Ed wanted to resurrect his mother, whereas Tucker just didn't want to get fired and be poor again.
    2. Ed was an 11-year-old child when he transmuted his mother, whereas Tucker is a full grown adult.
    3. Ed blames himself for losing Al's body by playing God with people's lives so recklessly, whereas Tucker insists that what he did was right up until the bitter end.
    • Simply put, Ed and Tucker are nothing alike at all because while the former is a brave jerk with a heart of gold, the latter is nothing more than a cowardly deluded narcissist.
  • Overall, Tucker is such a wholly disgusting and contemptible individual that Hiromu Arakawa even showcases him (alongside Father) as the only character to end up in Hell for his actions, while everyone else goes to Heaven.

What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]

  • He genuinely expected to be allowed to keep his job for transmuting Nina, when all it really did was get him quickly found out (precisely because his new talking chimera can...well, talk), beaten to a pulp, put under house arrest and finally murdered by Scar. It's easy to tell from his "damn brat" line that he really didn't want to be found out.
    • It's honestly only a miracle that his wife didn't choose to sell him out after she became a chimera. And even if Ed didn't figure it all out, someone certainly would've suspected Nina's disappearance soon enough.
  • Although creating talking chimeras does sound ingenious on paper, in truth Tucker's actual alchemy skills are extremely subpar and what he did to his family was completely pointless even from a research perspective. The military had already managed to create fully functional human/animal chimeras that can morph between their human and animal forms at will by the time of his current assessment. He was even on the brink of getting fired purely because of his incompetence.

Trivia[]

  • Only the manga and Brotherhood versions of Shou Tucker count as Pathetic Pinheads as his 2003 anime counterpart is too remorseful and tried to right past wrongs.
