Shou Tucker (ショウ・タッカー Shō Takkā) is a minor antagonist in the Fullmetal Alchemist manga and 2009 anime series. He is a State Alchemist known for creating talking chimeras and is visited by the heroes Edward and Alphonse Elric. During the brothers' visit in his estate, they uncover the horrifying truth behind his work.
He was voiced by Makoto Nagai in Japanese, and by Chuck Huber (who also voiced Mr. Shu in Dragon Ball Z) in the English dub.
What Makes Him Pathetic?[]
- He turned his own wife, 4-year-old daughter Nina and pet dog Alexander into talking chimeras both in the name of science and to not lose his job, for which Ed would've beat him to death if it wasn't for Al. His wife starved herself to death just to end the pain, while Nina was mercy killed by Scar.
- It's implied he turned other people into chimeras as well, as multiple creatures are shown throughout his lab while being confronted by Ed and Al.
- He shows zero remorse for his actions nor does he take any responsibility for them, calling human transmutation "a necessary step" while also complaining that nobody understands him since he and Ed both did the same thing, even going as far as to say he and Ed are exactly alike.
What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]
- Even before his reveal, he's shown to be quite irresponsible and negligent:
- He left Nina, his 4 year-old daughter, in charge of keeping Alexander tied up even though he could've done it himself since Nina most likely didn't know how to properly tie up a dog, leading to Alexander jumping on top of Ed.
- He keeps his house in a rather messy and poor condition, with the kitchen sink being filled with dirty dishes and unorganized books in drawers.
- He genuinely expected to be allowed to keep his job for transmuting Nina and Alexander, when all it really did was get him quickly found out (precisely because his new talking chimera can...well, talk), beaten to a pulp, put under house arrest and finally murdered by Scar. It's easy to tell from his "damn brat" line that he really didn't want to be found out, which he of course did a terrible job at.
- It's honestly only a miracle that his wife didn't choose to sell him out after she became a chimera. And even if Ed didn't figure it all out, someone certainly would've suspected Nina's disappearance soon enough.
- His argument saying that he and Ed are no different falls flat for three main reasons:
- Ed wanted to resurrect his mother, whereas Tucker just didn't want to get fired and be poor again.
- Ed was an 11-year-old child when he transmuted his mother, whereas Tucker is a full grown adult.
- Ed blames himself for losing Al's body by playing God with people's lives so recklessly, whereas Tucker insists that what he did was right up until the bitter end.
- Simply put, Ed and Tucker are nothing alike at all (as Ed outright states) because while the former is a brave jerk with a heart of gold, the latter is nothing more than a hypocritical and cowardly deluded narcissist.
- Although creating talking chimeras does sound ingenious on paper, in truth, his actual alchemy skills are extremely subpar, with his incompetence being the whole reason he was on the brink of getting fired. Additionally, what he did to his family was completely pointless even from a research perspective, as the military had already managed to create fully functional human/animal chimeras that can morph between their human and animal forms at will by the time of his current assessment, so it's honestly a mystery on how he even earned his certification in the first place.
