Stuart “Stu” Macher is the secondary antagonist of the classic horror film Scream, the first instalment of the franchise of the same name.
He is a student at Woodsborrow High School, as well as one of Sidney Prescott’s best friends and Tatum Riley’s boyfriend, whom despite being a complete prick, seems like a comically harmless enough young man. However, it’s soon made clear that he’s an utterly childhood madman, whom helps Billy Loomis in his killing spree across Woodsborrow and his revenge plot against Sidney.
He is famously portrayed by Matthew Lillard.
What Makes Him Pathetic?[]
- After being dumped by Casey Becker, he lied to his new girlfriend; Tatum Riley that he dumped her for her (which even if true, is a pretty vile thing to do in the first place).
- Alongside his best friend; Billy Loomis (unknowingly on orders from Roman Bridger), he enters into the Prescott house, in which they both attacked and stabbed Maureen Prescott to death (including stabbing her in the chest, stomach and groin) and both left afterwards (with Billy also framing Cotton Weary for what happened, as he stole his coat and the fact that Maureen and Cotton were having an affair, alongside Sidney’s testimony, ended up having Cotton being unfairly put on death row as a result for Billy and Stu’s own crimes).
- Wishing to go on a killing spree alongside Billy, exactly on the one year anniversary of Maureen’s death, they both decide to target Casey Becker, Stu’s ex girlfriend, by calling and taunting her over the phone (after Bill briefly flirts with her, before becoming more aggressive towards her). However, it’s then revealed that the two of them somehow kidnapped Casey’s new boyfriend; Steven Orth, who Stu then repeatedly stabs in the stomach, so Casey can see his tied up body in her back garden. After this, he allows Casey to briefly run off, until he catches up with and stabs her to death (disemboweling her body and hanging it on a tree with her intestines for her parents to find moments later). Additionally, they planned to frame this (as well as all their other crimes) onto Neil Prescott, hoping the police would immediately assume his guilt.
- The day after Steven and Casey’s brutal murders, Stu makes unnecessary remarks about how only a man could have killed then both and trying to give a vile “tutorial” of how to and where to stab someone, while finding genuine amusement in the process.
- Entered Sidney’s house as Billy calls her and asks her “Do you wanna die”, only to immediately attack and smack her head on the ground, then chased her upstairs and failed to kill her.
- At an unknown point, alongside Billy, he somehow kidnapped Neil Prescott who was meant to be on a work trip and held him as a personal hostage, for at least a couple weeks of days.
- After learning of Billy’s temporary arrest and seeing Sidney, Stu makes an unnecessarily insulting comment about how she “broke his heart”, further showing Stu’s lack of true loyalty towards Billy. Additionally, when he sees two fake Ghostface's running down the school corridor, he makes another unnecessary comment about how it’s “like Christmas”, which further annoys Tatum.
- After finding out about Sidney’s scare in the bathroom (which Stu may or may not have been responsible for), he makes yet another insensitive comment about it (leading to Tatum to once again, rightly shut him up). Then almost immediately after, announces that he’s going to use the opportunity of the school closing down due to the local killings he’s partially responsible for, by throwing a huge house party to celebrate.
- Bullied Randy Meeks at the video shop he worked at, intentionally creating a mess, inappropriately touching his ear and making other inappropriate remarks go humiliate/bully him, just for (rightly) suggesting he and Billy are the killers (with him also letting Billy humiliate Randy afterwards).
- With Billy’s grand plan finally in motion, Stu sends Tatum down to the basement, under the guise of him wanting her to get some more beer for him, despite more than knowing that Billy was waiting down there for her, so he could kill her (which obviously leads to her death and body being horribly mutilated as a result).
- Tried to stab and kill Randy while his was drunk and watching television, until he heard Sidney’s screams.
- After hearing Sidney screaming outside, he went out to once again and try and kill her, but this time taking Kenny Brown’s life as well, by coldly slitting his throat and leaving him to painfully bleed to death.
- After having supposedly killed Billy, Stu tries to convince Sidney to give him the gun, as well as abandon Randy outside, without any sort of care for his well being and trying to guilt Sidney as soon as she closes the door on both of them for her own safety.
- After his true nature is revealed to Sidney (alongside Billy), he expresses genuine sadistic satisfaction in everything he’s done and even admits he did everything he did because he thought it was just fun. Additionally, Stu expressed a desire to slaughter even more people, once he planned to get away with all of his crimes (which never would have happened anyways).
- To try and see through their already idiotic plan, when instructed by Billy stab him in the side and not too deep to appear convincing enough for the police, Stu decides to cruelly stab Billy way deeper than they had planned (though to be fair, Billy deserved it and he did stab Stu first and clearly went deep into stabbing him for cruelty’s own sake, so it’s not like it was completely unwarranted).
- When chasing and pinning Sidney down onto the floor, while admitting he always had a “thing” for her (albeit in a very creepy and insincere manner), he makes one last attempt to take the woman’s life, only for her to cause the television to fall onto Stu’s head and seemingly electrocute him to his well deserved death.
- While to say he has many comical moments would be putting it mildly, especially with his in general childish and very over the top behavior (even after his true nature is revealed), as well as one liners and physical comedy (such as what he does to Randy at the video store for example). However, while Stu’s antics are funny for the audience to watch, his crimes and in general sadistic actions are still taken very seriously in universe, with even his humor after his true colors are revealed, being meant to show a twisted and unstable psychopath, rather than to make people openly laugh at or with him.
- Overall, Stu is a cruel, sadistic, remorseless, irredeemable and childish psychopath who has absolutely no care for anyone or anything in his life, as he just enjoys hurting others for his own amusement (something he outright admits multiple times).
What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]
- He dropped fairly needless hints to him being one of the killers, for example making a needless and sexist suggestion that the person who murdered Steven and Casey could only have been a man, rather than a woman and immediately after, makes a comment about how you kill people by stabbing them from their “groin to their sternum”, with even Billy giving him a “shut up” look on his face and this is pretty clearly what started off Randy’s suspicions of Stu (as well as Billy as a result).
- When Sidney locks him out of her bedroom, Stu makes very little actual effort to break into her room, just shaking his arm around through the door, nowhere near her, instead of trying to find a more effective way to break in.
- Assuming it was him who attacked Sidney in the restroom and not Billy (as it's never explicitly stated whether it was Billy or Stu), then the fact itself that he chose to put on his Ghostface costume in a public bathroom is very stupid, as anyone could've walked in and found out he was one of the killers by seeing him get dressed.
- He further makes himself look more suspicious the day after he attacked Sidney, by mysteriously checking his head for bruises despite having seemingly no logical reason to and making a couple of insensitive comments.
- Despite seeing the TV's in Gale’s van that had cameras in his house, Stu does nothing to destroy the footage/or try to find the cameras for obvious reasons, of covering up the evidence and thus give him a far better chance at getting away with his own and Billy’s crimes, instead choosing to chase Sidney, whom Billy already had plans for.
- While fault is partially shared with Billy, despite the fact they both wanted to live and already foolishly blame all of their crimes on Neil, Stu still decided to stab Billy way deeper than they’d already rehearsed previously (in fact, stabbing each other to make themselves look more convincing to the police was an absolutely ridiculous decision in itself, for pretty obvious reasons).
- Him and Billy’s plan in general was very poorly thought out and never going to work, as their grand plan amounted to framing Neil for a bunch of killings they committed, that only they’d have the motive to commit (as while Neil was grieving his wife’s death, he had no real motive to go after and kill a bunch of high schoolers that his daughter is friends with). In comparison to Neil, Stu personally knew all of the victims (apart from Kenny) and had a known insensitive/hyperactive personality associated with one of the masked killers. It also doesn’t help, that Stu kept touching Neil at one point and the period is set in a time where forensics were starting out, which would have further ruined Stu and Billy’s cover story. Additionally, Stu expressed a desire to kill even more people if he somehow managed to get away with his current crimes, which inevitably would have gotten him caught or even killed at some point.
- While Billy knocks out Gale after she tries to shoot them, Stu doesn't keep an eye on Sidney while Billy deals with Gale, which gives Sidney enough time to escape with Neil and call the police.
- When Sidney calls him to tell him and Billy that she reported them to the police, Stu shows more concern about getting in trouble with his parents over the fact that's going to jail or is on the verge of death from his multiple wounds, which he does nothing to treat.
Trivia[]
- He is currently one of the two Scream villains to count as a Pathetic Pinhead, alongside Jason Carvey.
- His Pathetic Pinhead status could change in Scream VII, depending on what capacity he returns in, given Matthew Lillard has confirmed Stu will appear in some form.
