Suguru Kamoshida is a major antagonist in the 2016 game Persona 5, serving as the main antagonist of the first heist called "The Castle of Lust".
He is the sports teacher at Shujin Academy and a former Olympic Volleyball champion who hides his true nature as a depraved sexual predator beneath the façade of a famous and nice sportsman. He is the arch-nemesis of Ryuji Sakamoto and Ann Takamaki.
He was voiced by Yuji Mitsuya in Japanese and D.C. Douglas in English. In the stage play adaptation, Shun Takagi played him.
What Makes Him Pathetic?[]
- He abuses his students in differing ways:
- For girls, he implicitly molests and rapes them for his own sick pleasure while beating and gaslighting them. It's also heavily implied that he rapes them too, given there are reportedly "strange noises" coming from his PE faculty room and girls always go to Kamoshida's palace with no shirt and only shorts on.
- For boys, he forces them to undergo aggressive training and emotionally abuses them if they lose a game. He also punishes them in harsh and unusual manners such as throwing numerous volleyballs at one student, having some guys repeatedly whipped by guards and forcing multiple dudes to run on a treadmill with a running spikes chasing after a pot of water.
- Even worse, Kamoshida doesn't let his students have breaks or rehydrate.
- He destroyed Ryuji's reputation by spreading rumors about his life at home, stating he had an abusive father. When Ryuji confronts him about it, all Kamoshida does is provoke the guy into punching him only to break his leg and lie about it being an act of self-defence. Due to this, the track team disbanded and Ryuji's mother was verbally attacked by the school staff whereas Ryuji was framed as a "traitor" and "delinquent".
- He forced Ann to be his lover in exchange for her best friend Shiho Suzui getting on the volleyball team, but not without threatening to take her off the team if Ann refuses his advances.
- When Ann refuses to sleep with him, Kamoshida sexually assaults Shiho out of spite (with there being some indications that he raped her too), which led to the girl attempting to commit suicide by jumping off the school's roof and thus falling into a coma and breaking one of her legs.
- Even though he has a change of heart, this is treated as a form of brainwashing rather than a legit redemption, and he only turned himself in due to having no choice as had it not been for the Phantom Thieves, he would have gleefully continued to abuse his students and ruin countless lives. Even then, Ryuji and Ann have lifelong trauma stemming from his actions as shown in Persona Q2.
- While he's not as heinous as Masayoshi Shido, he stands out for being more realistic in comparison along with having way less resources, being a gym teacher while Shido is a politician with a party under his command and a massive palace that he rules.
What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]
- His crimes are incredibly blatant and obvious, given he abuses his students out in the open due to his arrogance and the belief that he is untouchable. This puts him at high risk of either being caught by witnesses or getting fired from his job.
- His needless cruelty and pettiness (such as manipulating and dividing his PE students) gets easily traced back to him, and he makes no attempt to cover up his crimes due to his superiority complex.
- While he somewhat gets away with his crimes, this is only due to fame and social status, not intellect. Additionally, even though he is talented at volleyball, this is neglected when he performs his nasty atrocities due to his aggressive mistreatment of his students being very evident and visible.
- He lacks charisma and his false politeness is fairly superficial and paper-thin, with his authority relying heavily on fear rather than skill.
- Him ruining Ryuji's reputation was an incredibly dumb move as all it resulted in was the track team breaking up for good and Ryuji's mother being berated by staff, which thwarted many people's dreams of getting a sports career.
- When Ren, Ryuji and Yuuki confront him about what happened to Shiho, his response is to gloat about how she will never wake up from her coma, which causes Ryuji to consider attacking him, showing that Kamoshida enjoys provoking people and doesn't think about how his words or actions will affect others.
- In his palace, he puts pictures of Shiho on display in his library and there are a few racks with chains as well, meaning that if anyone were to come to his palace and see the shrine, he would get in huge trouble.
- He essentially caused his own defeat, as his actions led to the Phantom Thieves being formed in the first place and they targeted him due to the conclusion that he deserves to be chastised for his actions. Even after he is put down, he continues to be an arrogant jerk and tries to rationalize his actions by claiming he didn't sexually harass anyone and all they wanted was to get on his good side.
- Overall, he commits loads of self-destructive acts without any self-control or restraint that frequently destroy his reputation and credibility, overshadowing any successes or strategies he may have had.
Trivia[]
- He, Masayoshi Shido, and Junya Kaneshiro are the only Pathetic Pinheads in the Persona franchise. Notably, all three of them come from Persona 5.
- His alternate counterpart Kamoshidaman doesn't qualify as a PP due to being bog-standard and somewhat redeeming himself.
