Just so you know, this isn't personal.
~ Todd before killing Andrea.

Todd Alquist is a major antagonist of the fifth and final season of Breaking Bad and the secondary antagonist its 2019 sequel film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. He is the sororal nephew of Jack Welker, a member of the latter's gang of Neo-Nazis called the Aryan Brotherhood and the arch-nemesis and evil antithesis of Jesse Pinkman.

He was portrayed by Jesse Plemons.

What Makes Him Pathetic?[]

  • He killed Drew Sharp (a 14 year-old boy) just for looking like a threat even though nothing actually indicates that he was going to report him, Walt and Jesse to the DEA after they robbed a train for meth.
  • He helped his uncle and gang cripple Hank Schrader and kill Steven Gomez during their shootout in the desert, which later allowed Jack to execute Hank right in front of Walt even though he offered him $80,000,000 to save his brother-in-law's life.
  • When Jack was about to kill Jesse, Todd stopped him and insisted that they should torture Jesse and keep him as a slave who would cook meth for them instead, which led to Jesse being abused and held captive for 6 months.
  • He killed Andrea Cantillo in cold blood to punish Jesse for trying to escape from Jack's compound and refusing to keep cooking meth for him.
  • Even after his death, his treatment of Jesse is shown to leave the young man with PTSD, with even Badger and Skinny Pete being absolutely horrified at what their friend had been through.
  • His crimes are so bad that he unnerves not only the kind and funny Jesse, but also Mike Ehrmantraut (a elderly man with a strong sense of justice and civil attitude who has both seen and committed several murders).
  • While he has many affable moments and cares for his loved ones (to the point of them being too notable for Near Pure Evil as his affability is a key component of his character), this is not too big of a prevention as his dumb feats outweigh his redeeming qualities by a mile and his affability makes him creepy, not empathetic or likable.

What Makes Him A Pinhead?[]

  • Him killing Drew was a bad move as it would only draw attention to the train robbery he partook in rather than silencing any potential witnesses. It's honestly a miracle that Walt and his allies (as well as Jack and his gang) are the sole people who are confirmed to be aware of Todd murdering the boy with no remorse or hesitation.
    • Even worse, Drew was implied to have a family waiting back home for him, so he basically ruined their lives (even if he didn't foresee it or become aware of it later on).
    • He also said he did it to "protect the mission", which is a terrible excuse because the mission was already completed and there was hardly any evidence of it happening in the first place, and in fact, what Todd did actually created evidence.
  • While trying to make conversation with Jesse, the first thing Todd said to him was "shit happens", which was a nonchalant comment about his murder of Drew. This pushes a shaken up Jesse to punch Todd in the face to teach him that killing Drew was totally unnecessary and inexcusable, which shows that he doesn't think before he talks.
    • Speaking of Jesse, Todd killing Drew only led to him (Jesse) leaving the drug trade and despising it, so the measures that he took did much more harm than good in the long run.
  • He has numerous moments where he puts his own life in danger:
    • When he helped Declan cook meth, he was quite reckless and even ended up causing a fire, which only led to Declan kicking him out of his lab. While this was unintentional, it doesn't change anything.
    • He returned to being a criminal after Walt left Albuquerque for 6 months, which put him at risk of being arrested for self-explanatory reasons.
    • It's implied that he left the roof of his car in a way that apparently disturbed and endangered his neighbors, showing his lack of cleanliness.
    • After killing his cleaning lady named Sonia, he took Jesse on a trip to get rid of the body, and after getting out of his car with Jesse, he left the gun on his car unprotected, which made it extremely easy for Jesse to pick the gun up and consider shooting Todd to avenge Andrea. The only reason Jesse decided not to go through with murdering his archenemy was because Jack threatened Brock's life, so he was too scared to do anything to Todd.
  • He, for some reason, thinks that Jesse is his friend, as he didn't realize that Jesse actually hated him for killing a child and he didn't see any problem in killing his girlfriend Andrea, when the latter only made Jesse hate him even more and this would damage his wellbeing psychologically to the point where he killed Todd out of malice and anger, showing that he isn't afraid of bringing out Jesse's bad side for the fun of it.
  • He has a one sided crush on Lydia Rodarte Quayle, and he is too stupid to see that she obviously didn’t feel the same way about him.
  • After his gang members were gunned down by Walt's machine gun, Todd's reaction was to stare outside the window and attempt to comment on Walt's actions (or maybe ask who attacked them) without knowing that Jesse would sneak up behind him and use the links of his handcuffs to strangle him to death, and he doesn't even make a remote attempt to escape Jesse's grip on him and chooses to struggle against it instead.
    • If anything, the only method he uses to try and escape Jesse's grasp is elbowing him in the stomach, and not only does it not do a thing, but Todd somehow thought he could escape by doing it once. This clearly leads to his well-earned death afterwards, which is played for no sympathy at all.

Trivia[]

  • Despite not being a Hate Sink or on the same scale of vileness as his uncle Jack (who isn't a Pathetic Pinhead), he has a reputation for being one of the most unlikable characters in the show due to his murder of a child and cruel treatment of Jesse, cementing his Pathetic Pinhead status.
