What a douchebag.
I was rewatching Naruto, since it's one of my favorite anime. I discovered a candidate that might qualify. I say "maybe" because I don't know if they're stupid enough, but I think it might qualify. It's another case of Fake Mastermind.
Note: Since I've unfortunately never read the manga (unfortunately), this proposal is only for the anime version, since I don't know if it counts in the manga. Or maybe the manga version is very different.
What’s the Work?
Do I need to say it? Naruto is one of the most famous and popular shonen manga/anime of all time. The series tells the story of the titular protagonist: Naruto, an outcast from the Hidden Leaf Village, who dreams of becoming a Hogake to gain the respect and recognition of his people.
Who's the Candidate?
Mizuki is practically the first antagonist to appear in the anime. He is one of the jonin from the Hidden Leaf Village who reveals himself to be dishonest and selfish. He supposedly wanted to help Naruto pass the test. In reality, he convinces Naruto to steal the scrolls for his own gain. He is Iruka's archenemy and the first antagonist Naruto directly faces.
What Makes Him Pathetic?
- Initially, he appears to be a friendly sensei who wants to help Naruto, but in reality, he is a traitorous scoundrel who manipulates Naruto into stealing the scroll which contains several secrets of the Hidden Leaf Village for his own benefit.
- When Iruka discovers the truth, he attacks Iruka with the shurikens and reveals the truth to Naruto, that he had the Nine-Tailed Fox sealed within him, which was the reason why he was rejected and despised by the village, much to Naruto's sadness.
- He continues to sadistically provokes Naruto and Iruka, until he is deservedly beaten by Naruto.
- He along with Raijin and Fujin, escape from prison and beat up Asuma, Kurenai, and other Jonins who were in prison to investigate.
- At one point in the past, he kills one of his teammates on a mission because he injured his leg, and Mizuki justifies this by saying that he would only slow down the team.
- It is revealed that he was working for Orochimaru, he does not show any care for his village as he was not saddened by Orochimaru's actions.
- After drinking the potion, he transforms into a half-human, half-tiger hybrid, where he tries to kill Naruto and Iruka.
- It's revealed that he was never, nor even considered Iruka a friend, hating and despising him as a child out of pathetic jealousy. He doesn't sympathize and even mocks the death of Iruka's parents.
- He has no redeeming qualities or comedic moments, standing out as one of Naruto's most repulsive villains.
What Makes Him a Pinhead?
- He doesn't assume that Naruto would tell Iruka or anyone that he told him about the prank, or even tell him to keep it a secret since Naruto tells Iruka easily.
- He thinks Naruto is just like him, and that he would use the scroll for revenge and a desire for power, whereas Naruto clearly only wanted the scroll to pass the test to become a Ninja and at no point showed any vengeance.
- Despite being a Chunnin, he managed to be easily beaten by Naruto when he wasn't even a Genin and was an inexperienced ninja, showing how pathetic and weak he is.
- His killing one of his teammates on a mission by strangling him wasn't well thought out, as he didn't consider the idea that the autopsy would reveal that the cause of death was asphyxiation. And that he lied about his condition. This is associated with him and results in him being suspended and unable to become a teacher.
- He considers himself a "manipulative genius," even though he's nothing more than a pawn in Orochimaru's schemes, and he was destined to lose anyway.
- He falls into the obvious trap by following Naruto and gets trapped in a capture jutsu, where Naruto defeats him with his Rasengan. This is also due to the potion he takes that causes his old age.
Preventions/Mitigating Factors/Freudian Excuse?
Mizuki isn't Pure Evil because he doesn't stand out from the standard heinousness of the Naruto Universe, as he doesn't have any redeeming qualities or comedic moments, as I mentioned earlier.
Too smart? I thought about it, but I don't think so. His plans aren't all that well thought out. If he has any clever moments, they're minor and don't overshadow his stupid mistakes. An example of this is when he tries to lure Naruto and Iruka into a trap, but it backfires because he underestimates Iruka's intelligence, and the trap backfires. So no, this guy isn't very smart, in my opinion. Charisma? Not really. Several Naruto villains have far more charm than this scoundrel. Master Manipulator? Not really. He manages to manipulate Naruto in the first episode because Naruto was a naive kid who desperately wanted to pass the exam and make Iruka proud.
In his filler arc, he appears somewhat insecure and envious of Iruka, but this doesn't make him nearly likable, since unlike Iruka, who lost his parents, Mizuki hasn't suffered any tragedy or been ostracized by others. His anger and contempt toward Iruka stem from pathetically petty envy and jealousy because Iruka received more attention than him. He also sabotages his own dreams and goals, since he couldn't become a sensei because of his stupid act of needlessly killing his own companion. Eventually, he alienates the few people who loved and respected him. In the end, he's left alone and miserable due to his own selfishness.
Final Verdict
Yes to him, but what do you think?
