Dang, no wonder King George III liked you.
I was wondering for a while if anyone from Locke & Key really counted on here, and while I'll concede the demon from the third season is at least somewhat cunning and skillful in general, I wondered about the old British dude he was using as a vessel, and I realized he was actually a fantastic candidate. I certainly know I hate him…
What is the work?[]
Locke & Key is a TV show about the Locke family moving to Keyhouse Manor. Frederick Gideon gave their ancestors a hard time and got possessed by a demon who is at least slightly smart and competent, so this is just his human counterpart being discussed here.
Why is he pathetic?[]
He is an extremely sadistic and deluded psychopath who works for King George III in a particularly notorious infantry unit and believes that the meaning of life is to make people suffer. He thus ensures people are following the laws of Colonial Era England; in other words, he has spent years and years being a plague to anyone unlucky enough to live on the Northern Shore, killing people he suspects of being rebels and burning old ladies and girl teenagers while he's at it.
One day when he's out on terrorizing business, he bumps into Peter Locke. He beats him up and lets his soldiers help themselves to Peter's possessions. Then he tries to kill Benjamin Locke's little sister and elderly mother just because he can and just because he is psychopathic. Peter dares to defend his kin, so Gideon responds by stabbing the elderly metalsmith dead, yelling that his death will mean nothing.
Later on, he runs into a cave instead of fleeing the town, thinking he will not be found, and he is found by the good guys quite quickly. He sees a portal arrive and possess his lackey, so he decides he wants to be possessed too. That's how desperate he is to score even a minor victory on the forces of good. Thankfully, this severe misstep results in him getting hanged (and much later used as a meat puppet by an omnicidal eldritch monster throughout the show's third season). In fact, his omnicidal demonic possessor wants to burn England to cinders (that's part of what "the end of this world being upon us" means). Good job…
And speaking of jobs, this dude is horrible at his. As far as we've seen his on-screen accomplishments are limited to stabbing one old man in the gut and even that was hard for him to do. Spanking his horses and hiding in a cave also exhibited his incompetence as they could've gotten clean out of Matheson by the time the Minutemen found them.
There are no Evil is Cool moments to be found here, no comedic moments, no humanizing traits of any kind. He is just a sadistic maniac and nothing more.
Why is he a pinhead?[]
He is as simpleminded as he is physically weak, and he's also horrible at strategy. He took his precious time with Peter Locke despite knowing Minutemen could jump into action at a moment's notice, and he has literally no backup plan for that at all. Benjamin must've been doing something while his dad came under attack by the Brits, after all. He could've retreated and left town but instead he opts for spanking his horses, relinquishing them forever so he can hide in a cave which Benjamin saw coming from a mile away. And as stated prior, he unwisely allows a demon to possess him, but it does next to nothing to change his fate as he gets his butt kicked by the Minutemen anyway. I'm tempted to say he is naught but a montage of unintellectual feats during the few times we see him without his demonic possessor.
Verdict[]
I have faith this destructive, psychopathic, brainless loser will find a place here with ease.
