Pathetic Pinhead Wiki
Karen using Aries to entertain boys

Treat others how you would want to be treated folks! Don't force your spirits into uncomfortable situations like this one.

I felt the need to talk about a classic anime with a character that is absolutely loathsome.

What's the Work?[]

Fairy Tail is a manga about wizardry. wizards form groups known as guilds, and they take various jobs to help others. The most notable being Fairy Tail.

Who is Karen Lilica? What Does She Do?[]

There are many types of magic within Earth Land. You have Dragon Slayer Magic which was invented and taught by dragons themselves, you have shapeshifting magic which allows the wielder to transform into various creatures, Requip magic, useful for wizards who specialize in more physical combat, and then you have the summoners who specialize in what is known as Celestial Spirit magic. Wizards who specialize in celestial spirit magic use keys to summon creatures known as celestial spirits. One of the most notable wizards in this category is Lucy Hearfilia who shows to develop a strong bond with her spirits to the point of viewing them as family, and the spirits feel the same (yes, even Aquarius cares even if she doesn't show it all that often). But unfortunately, not all celestial spirit wizards view celestial spirits as closely.

Such is the case with former Blue Pegasus wizard, Karen Lilica. Karen was a Celestial Spirit Mage who owned the keys of Leo and Aries among some other keys, but these two keys are the ones that get focused on. And when it comes down to it, Karen views her celestial spirits as nothing more than tools. She constantly summons Aries purely to take advantage of her whether it be to force her into doing something, needing somebody to take her anger out on, or even just straight up using her as a shield against dangerous attacks (The celestial spirits may be immortal, but that doesn't mean they can't feel pain, lady!). She even offers Aries for sex services, which is absolutely scummy (okay, it doesn't actually say she does, but it might as well given she summoned her to attract sleaseballs). She obviously is a terrible person. In fact, her treatment ultimately results in her spirits essentially going on strike. Leo in particular forcibly summons himself to ensure Karen can't summon and abuse Aries anymore. Leo also makes it clear he has no intention of closing his gate until Karen learns to treat her spirits with the respect they deserve. It's important to note that what Leo is doing is a very noble sacrifice. Although immortal, Celestial Spirits are not meant to be in Earth Land for too long, so being there for as long as he has takes an huge toll on his body. In spite of this, he refuses to relent until Karen grows a heart. And it is important to note that the longer Leo keeps his gate open, the weaker both he and Karen end up becoming (since it takes a toll on both of their energy)

He won't even allow her to trick him as when she says she will stop abusing her spirits, he is able to tell she is lying. She doesn't even bother to keep the facade up as she screams her intent to double down on abusing Aries once she is rid of Leo. Needless to say, Leo had no intent on giving up as he remained in Earth Land (even growing to love the atmosphere) no matter how bad it is for him... Unfortunately, Karen proves herself beyond reason as she ends up taking a job in spite of the condition she was in. This act ultimately gets Karen killed and her keys taken by a dark guild celestial wizard named Angel. As for Leo, he is blamed for Karen's death and banished from the Celestial Spirit World, forcing him to take up the identity of Loke and becoming a member of Fairy Tail until he ceases to exist... All because he was trying to protect his fellow spirits from abuse.

It's a good thing he met Lucy who was able to reason with the Celestial Spirit King into changing his punishment to serve as Lucy's celestial spirit, which would ultimately reunite Loke with Aries down the line. Still too close of a call given how this could have been avoided if Karen hadn't been so entitled over how she treated them.

Is She Pathetic?[]

Well, I can tell you guys one thing. This wizard definitely lives up to her name. She is absolutely horrible to her spirits, taking advantage of them in every possible way. Even her fellow guildmates are established to be appalled by how she treats them. She is just so entitled with how she uses her celestial spirits that she refuses to change her ways, even when Loke makes his stance clear. She proves so stubborn that she inadvertently ends up nearly dooming him to fading from existence, and he likely would have if Lucy hadn't convinced the Celestial Spirit King to repeal his banishment.

Is She A Pinhead?[]

Alright. It's made clear that celestial spirits can't kill their contractors as doing so would result in their banishment from the spirit realm (which is basically a death sentence for celestial spirits as spending too long in the mortal realm is fatal). Even so, abusing what are essentially immortal beings is an incredibly stupid move as even if they can't kill, that doesn't mean they can't find other ways to retaliate which is what Loke did by forcibly summoning himself to make sure she can't summon any spirits... and that ultimately leads to the other detail that shows how dumb she is. The fact she attempts to take a dangerous job despite knowing she can't use her magic which is what ultimately gets her killed and Loke unfairly banished (because even if Loke didn't intend for Karen to die, he is still deemed responsible for her death, meaning he broke the no killing rule because of her selfishness and stupidity). And should also be noted that the longer a spirit is out, the more magic is used, and it is made clear that Loke had been out for a while. This meant that Karen was in no condition to take a job of any kind, so taking the job that had her fighting a dark guild was even more dumb as it meant she practically handed her keys over to Angel.

Important Note[]

In the anime, there is a bit where what appears to be Karen's spirit appearing before Loke when he is forgiven for getting her killed. She ends up smiling, indicating that she learned her lesson. While this could potentially be disqualifying, keep in mind a few factors. First, we don't actually know if that was actually Karen's spirit or a hallucination that Loke was having. Second, this is an anime only detail, which means it isn't canon. Because of this, we can't really put this factor into equation.

Verdict[]

I will say yes to this horrible abuser.
