Haven't I told you he's not going? He's going to Stonewall High and he'll be grateful for it. I've read those letters and he needs all sorts of rubbish — spell books and wands and──I AM NOT PAYING FOR SOME CRACKPOT OLD FOOL TO TEACH HIM MAGIC TRICKS!!!
~ Vernon Dursley to Hagrid on Harry being accepted into Hogwarts

Vernon Dursley is a recurring antagonist in the Harry Potter films, Dursley is Harry Potter’s uncle by marriage and the head of the Dursley household. Born into the Muggle Dursley family, he attended Smeltings Academy and later worked at Grunnings, eventually receiving an award for his long service. Vernon met Petunia Evans at an office job in London, married her, and settled at 4 Privet Drive in Little Whinging, Surrey. His main traits include being abusive, bigoted, and highly prejudiced against anything related to the magical world.

He was portrayed by the late Richard Griffiths in the films.

What Makes Him Pathetic?[]

  • Vernon frequently avoids facing problems directly, preferring to hide or run away from magical threats rather than confronting them. His attempts to suppress Harry’s magical abilities are driven by fear and ignorance.
  • He reacts with fear and anger to anything magical, such as when letters from Hogwarts begin to arrive or when encountering magical beings.
  • He is shown to be a complete hypocrite as he likes to look tough, big, and impressive around his workers he also bosses them around and likes his position of authority, but after he gets a little threatened Vernon turns into a total coward as shown when he was scared and intimidated by wizards like Albus Dumbledore or Alastor Moody.
  • When Vernon couldn’t intimidate or bully someone he turns again into a coward this is shown when Hagrid found about Vernon’s extremely cruel treatment of Harry Hagrid also confronted him about him lying to Harry about his parent’s deaths, he was scared of Hagrid, same thing with Alastor Moody when he confronted Vernon about the same thing. His tough guy persona changes into a scared child persona, as when Harry threatens him with magic he backs down from his authoritarian tendencies.
  • Vernon's treatment of Harry is driven by an extreme desire to maintain a sense of normalcy, with no regard for Harry’s well-being. He forces Harry to live in the Cupboard Under the Stairs for days and neglects him while spoiling his own son Dudley, he also tells Dudley to bully Harry whenever he gets the chance.
  • He shows no familial love towards Harry, instead treating him as a burden and a source of shame, and consistently prioritizes his own comfort and reputation over Harry's needs. He shows absolutely no gratitude when Harry saved his son Dudley from Dementors.
  • He bans the word magic and wizard around his house and gets extremely angry when someone says it and punishes them severely as shown with what he did to Harry.
  • Vernon's actions are petty and mean-spirited, such as locking Harry in a cupboard and denying him basic comforts, just to punish the kid for breaking a dumb rule. He ignorantly believes that mistreating Harry will prevent his magic from surfacing.
  • He consistently tries to prevent Harry from learning about his true heritage, he also lies about Harry's parents' deaths and attempted to destroy any letters from Hogwarts. He goes as far too freaking wrestle his son Dudley just to confiscate Harry’s letter from being accepted in Hogwarts.
  • He judges people just by how big their cars are, He also judges people by how expensive their clothes are. He showed no empathy to beggars in the streets.

What Makes Him A Pinhead?[]

  • His erratic actions, like driving his family several miles away from home to avoid Hogwarts letters, only result in greater frustration and failure. And this action didn’t really change anything.
  • His lack of understanding and inability to effectively manipulate situations often lead to Harry escaping or being rescued, such as when the Weasleys come to retrieve Harry using a flying car.
  • He is very narrow-minded as he gets enraged when people disagree or talk about stuff he doesn’t like, like if he has a higher standard when it comes to giving opinions which is just not true.
  • Vernon’s reliance on brute force and ignorance instead of understanding or compromise shows his lack of critical thinking. His refusal to accept the reality of the magical world leads to numerous humiliating and counterproductive situations.
  • He ignorantly believes that mistreating Harry will prevent his magic from surfacing when magic is actually innate.
