When they write the history of my reign, sweet sister, they will say it began today.
~ Viserys talking to his sister about the start of his reign when he reclaims the Iron Throne.

Prince Viserys Targaryen, self-proclaimed King Viserys III Targaryen and mockingly called The Beggar King, is a major antagonist in the A Song of Ice and Fire novels and its television adaptation Game of Thrones.

He is the youngest surviving son of the Mad King Aerys II Targaryen, the the younger brother of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, and the older brother to Daenerys Targaryen. Viserys is also his father's legal heir after his brother Rhaegar was killed during Robert's Rebellion. Because the rebellion had ended the Targaryen dynasty, this turned him into an exile who plotted to regain control of the Iron Throne.

In the television series, Viserys appears as a major antagonist in Season 1. In the novels, he can be regarded as the main antagonist from Daenerys' POV point in the first novel.

He was portrayed by Harry Lloyd in the show.

What Makes Him Pathetic?[]

  • He constantly abuses and beats his sister whenever she disobeys him.
  • He is deeply selfish as he is perfectly willing to let Drogo and his entire tribe rape her to get his army.
  • He is arrogant and egotisticial, constantly bragging about his crown and claiming that he will take back the Iron Throne and everybody will write the story of his reign in history books.
  • He is elitist and xenophobic, comparing the Dothraki to dogs and savages.
  • When two Dothrakis attack him, he orders Jorah to kill them, only for the latter to ignore him and force him to continue the ride on foot.
  • He beat Doreah and dragged her by the hair to his sister when he started realizing she was more loyal to her than to him.
  • When he realized the Dothraki were loyal to Dany and not to him, he tried to steal the dragon eggs and sell them far away, and when Jorah tried to stop him, he threatened him.
  • Openly insulted Dany and the Dothraki and even threatened to kill her unborn child if Drogo didn't give him his crown. He also claimed that only he had the right to spill blood in a Dothraki tent.
  • Cowardly begged for mercy when the Dothraki restrained him and Drogo killed him by pouring molten gold onto his face.
  • Even though he was her brother, Dany clearly doesn't miss him and allowed Drogo to kill him, showing that no one regretted Viserys after he died.

What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]

  • He is an obnoxious manchild who is persuaded he is going to get his army and crown and take the Iron Throne back simply by demanding things from Drogo and claiming he is their king.
  • He gets humiliated when two Dothraki nearly strangle him with a whip and he is forced to continue the ride on foot "like a slave".
  • He made a dimwitted yet fatal decision by staying in the camp and insulting and threatening Dany right in front of her husband, thinking there will be no repercussions against him because he believes Dothrakis can't kill in their tents, despite the fact that they can but without spilling blood.
  • After his death, Dany tells Jorah her brother wasn't good in anything, showing that he was an incompetent fool and a weak coward.
