Zé Pequeno (best translated as Li'l Zé and "Little José"), is the main antagonist of the 1997 Brazilian semi-autobiographical novel Cidade de Deus/City of God and its 2002 live-action film adaptation of the same name.
He is a Brazilian gangster and drug trafficker that terrorized the city of Rio de Janeiro during the 70s and 80s, He is archenemy of Ned and Runts.
He is portrayed by Leandro Firmino as an adult. While as a child, he is portrayed by Douglas Silva.
What Makes Him Pathetic?[]
- Since he was a child, Ze Pequeno has demonstrated sadism and violent tendencies.
- During the robbery at the motel, he enters and shoots all the employees and customers, laughing sadistically.
- Tired of Goose's (Buscape's older brother) bullying, Zé Pequeno kills him and puts an end to the Trio Ternura.
- By the age of 18, he had already robbed and killed countless people.
- Upon learning that a gang of street kids called the Runts have been stealing from a grocery store, he captures two of them and shoots them both in the foot. He then sadistically forces a boy named Steak n' Fries to kill one and release the other, as a warning.
- He raped Ned's girlfriend and forces him to watch the entire scene and mocks him afterwards. Later he kills Ned's brother and uncle.
- He starts in a shootout against Carrot that results in several deaths, including children.
- Her actions cause the corruption of Ned's, who was a good and nice guy to become vengeful and join Carrot's gang to get revenge on him.
- Although his death is brutal, it is deserved due to his cruel actions.
- While he does care for Benny and shows some affability towards Rocket, these are minor mitigating factors that don't make him any less pathetic.
- Although the film is full of criminals and gangsters, Zé Pequeno stands out as the most cruel, mean and ruthless in the film, being a rapist and a murderer and torturer of children.
What Makes Him a Pinhead?[]
- He is very impulsive, violent and prone to fits of rage over anything and this leads him to ruin as it causes him to quickly create enemies who want him dead, an example of this is when he unnecessarily torments Ned and sends a cruel warning to the Runts, this causes them to seek revenge against him, which later causes his death.
- His criminal "empire" only lasts for years purely because of the fear that others had of him and not because of intelligence and charisma. It is clear that his friend Benny helped him in this, since after Benny died his "empire" began to decline. Besides, her drug trafficking scheme is not complex, since several members of her gang are not very intelligent too and the police are quite corrupt and ignore local criminal acts through bribery.
- He really thinks he can recruit the Runts into his gang despite the cruelty he did before. He even gives them weapons and doesn't even consider the idea that they might betray him and take revenge on him for what he did, that's what happens next.
- After he is forced to bribe the police to let him go free, he is quickly surrounded by the Runts and does not attempt to flee despite the fact that they are clearly there to kill him in revenge for what he did and he is unarmed.
